[discussion_vu] Prayer (Salah) of the Prophet (s.a.w)

Assalaamu Alaikum WR WB

Prayer of the Prophet (s.a.w)

Mohammed (sal) said: "Pray as you have seen me pray".-       Books-Bukhari, Ahmed, Transmitted by Malik ibn Huvairish.(r.a)
There is no separate laws governing prayer between a man or women, both have to pray as Rasool(s.a.w) has shown us. The only difference is a woman cannot lead men in prayer, and the last rows of the prayer congregation are the best for women, as the first row is the best for men. Women should not pray in front of men, and similarly men should not pray behind women.

Always say Bismillah when you begin ablutions (wudu) and after wudu if you say "Ashadu Anlailaha illallah vahadahu laa shareeka la hu va ashadu anna Muhammadan abduhu va Rasoola hu – Allah hummajalni  minath tawwabeena vajalni minnal mutha tahhareen".  (Insha Allah(swt) all the eight gates of heaven would open out to you.

Immam Shafee said that if any women, whether your daughter, mother, sister, wife or any other women touches you, your ablution would become invalid – this is totally incorrect and false.  But the imams, all four of them said, "If we state anything contradictory to Quran and Hadees, throw them and emulate the Quran and Hadees. Do not make us responsible for your wrong actions".   There is a verse in the Quran stating that if you worry women, you would have to purify yourself; the Arabic word used is in the connotation – that if you have intercourse with women then you should purify yourself,  but Shafee Imam misunderstood it, and said that if men touch women or if the women touch men, then you should renew your ablution. This is actually false and hence it has to be thrown aside, and instead the Quran and Hadees would have to be followed.  There are many Sahih Hadeeses which state that Rasool(s.a.w) touched Aisha(r.a) in prayer (salah) itself, and vice versa Aisha(r.a) touched Rasool(s.a.w) in Prayer and their wudu (ablution) did not get invalidated – So women touching man, or man touching women does not invalidate the wudu (ablution).

1
.  When Rasool(s.a.w) stood for prayer he recited thakbir (Allahu Akbar) and raised his hands up to his ears.
Book – Muslim ; transmitted by Malik ibn Huvairish (r.a)
You can even raise your hands up to your shoulders level, this hadees is by Ibn Umar (r.a), book – Muslim.

2.  Rasool(s.a.w) placed his right hand over his left forearm (near the elbow) and placed it between his chest and umbilicus (naval)

The people were ordered to place the right hand on the left forearm in the prayer. Abu Hazim said, "I knew that the order was from the Prophet ."
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith
Hadith 1.707
Narrated by
Sahl bin Sad

There is a hadees in Muslim that the hands were placed between the chest and naval, which is also saheeh; but the hadees about placing the hands below the naval are innovated  and false, so they are unacceptable.
After reciting sura fathiha, and Quranic verses, you make your ruku (bowing posture)

3.  Before going to Ruku, Rasool(s.a.w) recited the Thakbir, and raised both his hands up to his ears or upto his shoulders, and then went to ruku.
Transmitted by – Ibnu Umar (r.a.); Book – Bukhari.

In ruku , Rasool(s.a.w) held his knees with both his hands, and the hands were kept straight, and his head and back were also in a straight line.   By Abu Humaidh (r.a)       Books – Tirmithi, Abu Dawood

(Rasool(s.a.w)'s tasbeeh was " Subhana Rabbiyal Aleem three times, and then Subboohun qudhdoosun rabbul malaaye katthu varrooh, subhanaka Allahhumma Rabbi vabi hamdika Allahhummagfirli.

4.  After reciting tasbeeh, Rasool(s.a.w) would say sami Allahu le man hamidha and would get up and once again raise both his hands upto his ears or shoulders, as in the beginning of the prayer.
By – Ibnu Umar (r.a);  Book – Bukhari.

And would recite

Allahhumma Rabbana va lakal hamd, millas samavathi, va milla arali, va ma baina huma, va milla ma shigta min shai- in bagathu.
Book – Muslim

5.  ……then Rasool(s.a.w) used to recite Thakbir and make his sajdha, Book-Bukhari; By-Abu Huraira (r.a)
In sajdha, he used to recite tasbeeh, the same as above but instead of (Subhana rabbiyal aleem 3 times, you have to recite Subhana rabbiyal A'ala) and then would get up and sit for sometime, Most important factor to note here is, Rasool(s.a.w) when he stood up from Ruku, he used to stand for the same amount of time as he spent in Ruku, before going to sajdha,  and similarly when he got up from the first sajdha, he would sit for the same amount of time he spent in sajdha before he made the next sajdha. Also in Sajdha you should not place the elbow on the ground, for Rasool(s.a.w) said do not go to sajdha like the dog (i.e. placing the elbow on the ground).  And also stated :

The worst of thieves is one who steals in prayer, and when the Sahabas asked, oh! Messenger of Allah(swt) how can one steal in prayer; he replied: they are those who do not perform their Ruku and Sajdha properly, they are the worst of thieves. (those who do the ruku and sajdha fast, fast)
Books: Ahmed,Hakim,Thafrani; By: Abu Kathadha.(r.a).

Also when from Ruku you go to Sajdha, you would have to place the leg first and then your hand (as Rasool(s.a.w) said do not sit down like the camel) the camel folds its forelegs first hence we would have to place the legs first. And also while in Sajdha you would have to keep your knee and thigh vertically straight and it should not be slanted.

When Rasool(s.a.w) got up and sat down from the first sajdha, he would recite: Allahum magfirli, varhamni, vahdini,va aafinee, varzuknee, vajburnee. – and then would perform his next sajdha.
Book: Abu Dawood;  - By Ibnu Abbas (r.a)

when Rasool(s.a.w) finished his second sajdha, he would not get up without sitting for sometime (as you sit on a hot rock) i.e he would sit for a short time before he got up for the next Rakah.
Books: Bukhari, Nisayee, Abu Dawood, Ahmed, Thirmithi,
Narrated by : Malik ibnu Huwairish (r.a).

When Rasool(s.a.w) got up for the next Rakkah, after finishing both sajdhas he would sit for a short while and then he would lean with both his hands on the floor and then he would get up.
Narrated by: Ayyub (r.a)  -  book : Bukhari

7.  Similarly he would perform the second Rakka, and after both the sajdhas he would sit to recite "attha heiyathu" Tashad dua. And while in this dua, he would keep both his hands on the thighs touching the knee. And he would keep his right hand fore finger stretched and lifted from beginning to end of his sitting. And with his right hand middle finger and thumb, he would make a ring, and the last two fingers he would keep it on his thigh stretched. (just like the Arabic number 53)
Narrated by: Abdulla Ibn Zubair (r.a) books: Muslim, Ahmed, nisayee.

b) There is also another hadees that he kept all his fingers folded and his forefinger stretched from beginning to end of the sitting.
Narrated by- Ibn Umar (r.a). Books:- muslim, Ahmed, Nisayee.
Both these hadees are shaheeh  but the first one is more sound and one could follow the first one of  these hadees.  But there is no hadees what so ever, that Rasool(s.a.w) raised his fore finger in Tashad, while reciting "ashadu anla e laha illAllah".

When Rasool(s.a.w) sat for Tashad, he would fold the foot of his left leg and sit on it, and he would keep his right leg foot erect with the toes pointing to the Kiblah.
Narrated by – Abu Humaidh (r.a); Book – Bukhari.

9.  When Rasool(s.a.w) stood to continue the prayer after Tashad, he would once again raise his hands to the level of his ears, or to shoulder level and then would place his hands in-between his chest and naval  as before.
Narrated by – Ibn Umar (r.a); Books – Bukhari, Nisayee,         Abu Dawood.
And so Rasool(s.a.w) would continue and finish his prayer with Taslim (Salaam)

Friends, I have given a brief account of the postures in prayer of Rasool(s.a.w) with authentic hadeeses; I do hope and pray you would benefit by it, and also correct your prayer to the ways of Rasool(s.a.w) if you have not done so before.

Allah is He than whom there is no other god the sovereign the Holy One the Source of Peace (and Perfection).  The Guardian of Faith the Preserver of Safety the Exalted in Might the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to Allah! (far above is He) above the partners they attribute to Him.
Quran: 59 -  23

Friends please do understand that Allah(swt) is far far above all the partners people attribute to Him – not only that He is far far above all the praises we the Muslims attribute to Him also, for no one knows,  how pure Allah(swt) is nor how much Praise He is worthy of, nor do we know how Great He is  - not you and me, not even the Prophets, not even the Jinns, not even the Angels know as to His real Power or any of the above, - Allah(swt) is far far above all that we attribute to Him also – Allah(swt) alone knows that;  and next to stating the Kalima and becoming a Muslim, the Most virtuous  of all deeds is the Salah (prayer) so please do not miss it and also PLEASE do pray as Rasool(s.a.w) prayed for only then it becomes valid and you get your full virtues and its full benefits – and it would be a great Blessing to you and for all whom you pray for.

May Allah(swt)  help us to be MOST regular in Prayers and also help us to pray exactly as Rasool(s.a.w) prayed, with utmost ease and comfort and get the full benefits and the Blessings of Allah(swt) and May He also forgive ALL our sins and help us to get into Paradise without any questions being asked (aameen, aameen, aameen valhumdu lillahi Rabbil aalameen).

Please share this with as many Muslims as you can and request them to visit my website : http://www.basicofislam.com Insha Allah you and they would gain tremendously.
JAZZAKALLAH HAIRAN.

Wishing you ALL THE VERY BEST
A.H.Nazeer Ahmed
